Lead faculty, Alaska Family Medicine Residency Geriatric- Palliative Care Clinic

Never without a smile, Janel Kam-Macgruder helps the residents and faculty maintain the spirit of aloha. Janel was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended college in the Midwest at DePauw University and ultimately Loma Linda SOM. She couples matched to AKFMR with an interest in underserved and rural medicine. After residency, she worked part time in Anchorage, locum tenens work in Bethel, Alaska, and with the palliative care service at Providence. Janel grew an interest in Palliative care and hospice and attained her CAQ in this area.

Janel continues to work part time at AKFMR and with its associated Palliative care fellowship. She enjoys taking care of patients from infants to elderly in her clinic and on our hospital service with our medicine team. She also spends some time working with elderly patients, their families, with home visits, and inviting residents to enjoy such experiences with their patients as they age.
In her free time, she enjoys being outside with her kids and husband. The Kam-Magruder’s love winter for the fun of cross country skiing and down hill skiing. They also look forward to summer fishing, dip netting, camping, and mountain biking. Though they love everything Alaska has to offer, they make it a point to get their vitamin D in Hawaii and California and whenever possible seek out ever more traveling adventures. Janel is also an accomplished watercolor artist and designer of the Residency’s personal note cards.
