Jaime Hensel

I was raised in Atlanta, Georgia by Yankee parents. I attended Williams College in Massachusetts where I attained a BA in Psychology, then promptly spent five years adventuring, including working as a tall ship sailor, walking the Camino de Santiago, and guiding wilderness canoe trips. A deep desires to do human rights work led me towards nursing as a career path. I attended Yale University’s direct entry nursing program and graduated as a family nurse practitioner in 2013. Several experiences in graduate school let to my interest in palliative and hospice care, and I ended up writing my thesis on the state of pediatric palliative and hospice care in the US. However, immediately after graduation I moved to Seattle and worked as a primary care and urgent care provider at Country Doctor Community clinic, a federally qualified health center. The unique opportunity to work at the American research station at the South Pole in Antarctica lured me away from community health- I spent the last two austral summer seasons at the bottom of the world. I’m excited to move north to (relatively) warm Anchorage to pursue the PAMC palliative and hospice fellowship. In my free time I love being outdoors, especially sailing and canoeing, as well as reading, quilting, and playing fiddle.
